What's new on the site:
13 March 00 - The site structure has been overhauled, and it's now possible to search using keywords which are part of a semantic network. What this means is that, for example, you can find resources using the keyword 'London' by looking under the keyword 'UK'. The corpus of keywords is quite restricted, making it easy to work with, but this is not a problem since several keywords can be added for each resource.
25 Febuary 00 - We're partnering with WAPAW.com to bring a high quality directory structure to WML (Wireless Markup Language) content. WML is an application of XML, and together with RSS, seems likely to be one of the most widely used applications of XML.
25 September 99 - We've added a consumer-focused interface to xmlTree called TakePart.com. This is designed for people looking for RSS channels only, and cuts through all the XML technical jargon.
10 September 99 - We changed the format of the xmlTree Newsletter to RSS, so that we could use our 'off the shelf' NewsBoy delivery mechanism (the same mechanism for delivering all RSS channel content).
25 August 99 - We've added proper unsubscribe and change email address facilities for the News Boy delivery of news channels and weblogs. You can update your preferences here.
23 August 99 - We received an excellent mention in Release 1.0, Esther Dyson's monthly report, where Kevin Werbach describes xmlTree as "a directory of XML content resources organized using the Dewey Decimal System. xmlTree listings are tagged in XML with Dublin Core RDF metadata (see Release 1.0, 5-98) for easy searching by humans or web-based intelligent agents".
20 August 99 - We are busy setting up an affiliation service, where we provide free outgoing links to portals and headline news viewer providers. This means that once you have found a XML-based RSS, ScriptingNews, Moreover News or Weblog channel, you will be able to add it to your page in your favorite portal. These links should appear over the next month, but to get started, we are providing a News and Weblog email delivery service. For example, subscribe to Jorn Barger's Robot Wisdom or Moreover's Shipping News!
2 August 99 - We're trying to improve the readability of the site for those who don't understand all of the TLAs (Three Letter Acronyms) in use, by adding 'Jargon Buster' callout boxes. If you find a term or reference that you don't understand, please contact us and we'll add a 'Jargon Buster' for it.
28 July 99 - We've added over 600 forums to xmlTree from Network54. The threads of the forums are available as RSS channels, which means that you can view them in your favorite portal, and the forums themselves cover many unique topics. We've limited our selection to those forums which have more than 50 threads to make sure that only forums with frequent postings are displayed.
22 July 99 - We're exporting a list of News and Weblog channels using OCS in this large file. If you wish to use this file, please limit access to once per day, and please provide attribution to xmlTree as requested in the license. This URL will change when we add a flexible interface, allowing the requester to specify criteria for the leaf details to export.
20 July 99 - We've added all of the channels from Ian Davis' RssMaker, including those based on the BBC's news sites.
10 July 99 - A major change - the branch structure that the leaves appear on has been changed from our own ad-hoc categories to the Dewey Decimal System. This is because we want to tap into the 100 years of experience of classification gained in over a million libraries around the world, and work with a classification standard that is universally understood. XML allows us to import content details from other sites, and export our classification, and by picking a standard we hope to reduce the complexity of mapping between different classification schemata. As always, if you think we've misclassified a leaf, please let us know.
20 June 99 - We've simplified registration of XML content for you, if you already have a RDF file with Dublin Core elements describing the content, or if you have an My.Netscape Channel (RSS) file that you want to register. Simply enter the URL, and we'll read the description and pre-enter the fields for you!
